Writing (especially imaginatively involved works of fiction) and reading (especially fiction) are radical acts in our culture today. To do either requires deep attention. It requires swimming in a different ocean than the one most of us exist in right now. How do we turn off distractions in order to attend deeply to these pleasures?

Carrie Snyder is the author of four books of fiction, including Girl Runner, which was translated into a dozen languages and was a finalist for the Rogers Writers Trust Prize, and The Juliet Stories, a finalist for the Governor General’s award. Her latest novel, Francie’s Got a Gun, was published by Knopf Canada, summer 2022, and was named to the Globe and Mail’s Best 100 Books of 2022. Carrie is a consulting editor for The New Quarterly magazine, co-founder and project coordinator of the community storytelling workshop “The X Page, and teaches creative writing at the University of Waterloo. She also works in the public schools as a library clerk and secretary.
